Heron Bros. Ltd.’s £13.4m Aberavon Sea Front Leisure Centre is progressing well and is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2015. The development will replace the old Afan Lido Centre which was destroyed by fire over five years ago.
Currently the timber roof beams are being installed over the new pool hall and roof coverings are being added over the existing bowls hall building. Brick and block work to the building within the structure of the original bowls hall is also progressing well. This building will house the new, community meeting rooms, the youth club and the dry sports changing area at ground floor level and the fitness room, spin room and dance studio at first floor level.
The investment in the landmark seafront location will result in a purpose-built beachfront leisure centre, complete with a wave design roof, featuring a 25m pool with moveable floor, multiple changing facilities, a gym/fitness suite, a spin room, a dance studio, four court sports hall, a cafe and community rooms.
Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Ali Thomas, said: “I am pleased to see good progress being made on the construction of the new leisure centre. This will be a wonderful 21st century facility we can all be proud of and will be a focal point in enhancing our strategy and vision for regenerating the whole area.”
Building work on the project, which is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, started in spring 2014. We have worked with the Neath Port Talbot Council to maximise the socio-economic benefits for the local community and local residents. The £13.4 million scheme has boosted local employment, kick started the regeneration of the Aberavon Seafront and supported local events. On Saturday 6th December 2014, the Heron Bros project team partnered with local running group Run4all and held a 5km Santa Run to promote fitness for all. There were hundreds of runners, on a sunny Aberavon promenade, all in their Santa suits chasing down a Christmas turkey on a bike…with fun definitely had by all!
