Heron Bros has been recognised among the Top Considerate Constructors in the UK. The construction company was successful in winning two National Site Awards from the Considerate Constructors Scheme at Plaisterers’ Hall in London.

Heron Bros secured a highly revered Gold Award in this year’s Considerate Constructors Scheme for the construction of Ards Blair Mayne Wellbeing and Leisure Complex. The Scheme’s National Site Awards are one of the most distinguished accolades within the construction industry. They recognise the UK’s best performing construction sites that have demonstrated high levels of consideration in respect of the community, environment and workforce.

Karl McKillop (Heron Bros Construction Director), Annet McGowan (Ards Blair Mayne Wellbeing and Leisure Complex Junior Manager), Theresa McErlean (Heron Bros Contracts Manager), Ards and North Down Mayor, Cllr Richard Smart, and Gayle Wilson (Ards and North Down Borough Council’s Corporate Project Manager).

During the £30m development, Heron Bros made engagement with the local community a high priority. They encouraged local businesses to advertise their services on the site’s noticeboards and they also promoted careers in construction to colleges and schools.

First aiders and operatives were trained to use the defibrillator located nearby while goodwill activities included sponsorship of community races. The company also partnered with the National Trust and RSPB so the team could offset their carbon dioxide emissions.

“This was a unique and complex project with a wide range of challenges throughout,” said Contracts Manager, Theresa McErlean. “We’re proud of how smoothly the construction process went and the high standards we achieved. The positive feedback and reaction to the new complex has also made it all worthwhile.”

Ards and Blair Mayne Wellbeing and Leisure Complex opened to the public in January this year and features the most modern and advanced leisure amenities. Inside, the facilities include a six lane main pool and minor pool with moveable floors, a splash play area for toddlers and young children, an indoor soft play area, 110 station gym with three fitness studios, luxury spa and a unique Blacklight Adventure Zone which includes adventure golf, climbing walls and high ropes. There is a 100-seat Café and a fully fitted gymnasium with courts for netball, basketball and racquet sports as well as a separate full sized covered all-weather playing field for team sports in the Dome area. Outside, there is a Diversity Zone with sensory garden, a Pump Track for biking and Wheel Park for skateboarding, scooters, BMX and inline skating.

“The Council is delighted to bring this facility to residents and I hope that everyone in the Borough will make full use of it,” said Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Richard Smart. “I’m delighted that Heron Bros Ltd has managed to secure the Gold Award accolade. It’s very well-deserved and is testament to the very high standards that they achieved with this state-of-the-art leisure complex.”

The company was also awarded a Silver National Site Award for their performance on Andersonstown Leisure Project in Belfast. Construction of the £25m leisure project is currently underway and is due for completion at the end of 2019. In achieving a silver award, Heron Bros project team has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improving the image of construction, achieving exemplary standards in all areas of the Code of Considerate Practice:

  • Care about Appearance
  • Respect the Community
  • Protect the Environment
  • Secure everyone’s Safety
  • Value their Workforce
