Heron Bros. £9m extension to the Stevenson Hive building at the University of Glasgow has dramatically taken shape over the past few weeks.

The external façade of the building which was concealed by scaffolding has now been removed to reveal an impressive new addition to the main campus.

The Stevenson Hive building provides an extensive range of indoor sports amenities and incorporates a replacement Hive nightclub enhancing the student experience through the inspiring design of this impressive new sports and social venue.

Built on the site of the existing Hive nightclub, located at the eastern edge of the University’s Gilmorehill Campus, the Stevenson Hive building forms an important “gateway” to the University for those approaching from the city centre.

The new extension comprises of a five-storey building rising from a stone plinth, interconnecting with the existing Stevenson building and B-listed Glasgow University Union (GUU) to form the newly combined sports and leisure hub. In addition to a new sports hall with viewing gallery, the Stevenson Extension will provide more than 1400sq m of space for world class strength, conditioning and cardio training.

The GUU facility will encompass a new purpose built nightclub complete with podium and twelve metre long bar area, two additional bars/performance spaces and a glass fronted Café Bar along University Avenue.

Fitting out of the building will now proceed and it should be ready to open early in the new academic year.
