This £4 million project for North Down Borough Council was part of a wider Government Initiative to encourage local communities to recycle.
The project won the Sustainable Ireland Awards 2007 – Sustainable Building Project of the Year & a Bronze Award in the International Green Apple Award 2008 for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage.
Construction of the new model recycling centre made use of fluid concrete forms and overhead canopies to provide shelter from the elements and clear legibility through simple layout and quality signage. The scheme also included the construction of an education centre on site to promote the use of renewable and sustainable energies.
The project incorporated several sustainable and renewable energy sources including heating of the building and water by Solar Panels with the whole operation powered by a 850KW wind turbine.
