Trainee Site Engineer to a top UK Construction Manager
Theresa McErlean, Heron Bros. Contracts Manager has advanced from trainee site engineer to one of the UK’s Top Construction Managers in just 15 Years.
Sixty of the best construction managers in the UK have been named in the CMYA shortlists for nine categories.
Theresa is shortlisted for the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Construction Manager of the Year Awards 2020. She is named as a finalist within the Leisure Category for the successful delivery of the £30m Ards Blair Mayne Wellbeing & Leisure Complex.
We caught up with Theresa on site to find out more about the project and how she feels about being one of the Top UK Construction Managers.
Theresa McErlean, MCIOB spoke about the project: “This was a unique and complex project with a wide range of challenges throughout. We had a great team on the project with a high level of collaboration.
“We are so proud of the delivery of Ards Blaire Mayne Wellbeing & Leisure Complex. The positive feedback and reaction to the new centre has made it all worthwhile.”
The six leisure finalists will be whittled down to one winner when the awards are presented in November.
The announcement of the finalists for each category follows a rigorous assessment process which sees the CMYA judges assess paper applications, as well as panel interviews.
Theresa McErlean, MCIOB said: “Considering this was my first project as lead Contracts Manager I am absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted as a finalist in CMYA 2020. I aim to inspire my colleagues who work alongside me, and in particular the young women that are coming up through the ranks. It fills me with immense pride that I am succeeding in the construction industry knowing I can be a trailblazer for the young women starting out in their careers.”
Caroline Gumble, Chief Executive of the CIOB said: “These awards are the most rigorously judged in the industry and a unique barometer for management talent in our sector. To reach the final is a major achievement and a sure sign that the very highest level of professionalism is on show.”
This is not the first recognition of excellence Theresa and her delivery team have received for the state-of-the-art leisure project. In 2019 the project received a Gold Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Award and the Won the Social Community Construction Project of the Year at the Construction Excellence Awards 2019.
