Heron Bros successfully delivered the new £20 million Hartley Hospital in Southport months ahead of schedule, despite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic. This state-of-the-art 44 bed mental health facility brings together inpatient care and community services on a single site for the first time, replacing two older buildings. The hospital includes two specialist wards one for adults experiencing a mental health crisis and another for older patients requiring short term dementia and complex health care.
Built on the site of the former Southport General Infirmary and maternity hospital, the design carefully integrated modern features with patient wellbeing at its core. The building achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating and includes ensuite rooms designed with bespoke anti-ligature fittings to maximise safety. Thoughtful architectural elements such as internal garden courtyards, a café, family visiting rooms, a gym, multi-faith areas, and outpatient clinics create a welcoming, therapeutic environment.
A key challenge was meeting the stringent anti-ligature requirements, which Heron Bros addressed through close collaboration with the design team and their in house joinery facility. This resulted in specially designed doorsets featuring 180 degree return ensuite doors for optimal lock positioning, hardwood glazed screens, fire and smoke resistance (FD30 and FD60), anti-barricade functionality, and full factory finishes, ensuring a safe and functional space tailored to the needs of patients and staff.
The hospital was constructed on a live site, with the existing Boothroyd Unit remaining operational throughout. Phase two included demolition of old buildings and new landscaping with an expanded car park. Heron Bros also managed complex installation schedules involving specialised IT and medical equipment, delivering a technically advanced, secure, and patient focused facility that sets a new standard for mental health care environments.
