Creating Europe’s first therapeutic respite centre for families affected by cancer demanded exceptional sensitivity not only to the environment but also to the profound emotional needs of vulnerable families. Situated in one of Northern Ireland’s most scenic locations, the project called for a design and construction approach that harmonized with the stunning Shimna Valley landscape while providing a supportive sanctuary for those facing cancer.
Nestled just outside Newcastle in the breathtaking Shimna Valley, Daisy Lodge stands as a remarkable example of collaborative, purpose-driven construction. Since its completion in February 2014, this pioneering 16,000 sq ft facility has welcomed over 2,500 children and 9,000 family members, offering vital respite care within a nurturing, non-clinical setting. The centre’s creation marked a milestone as the first of its kind in Europe, designed to meet both the physical and emotional needs of families confronting cancer.
Heron Bros. delivered the mountain-style lodge two months ahead of schedule, achieving a seamless integration with the natural surroundings. The building’s design thoughtfully cuts into the hillside, presenting a single storey frontage that conceals a two storey complex behind. This innovative approach minimizes visual impact while maximizing the spectacular mountain views through extensive glazing and balcony features, creating a peaceful atmosphere that supports healing and reflection.
The lodge features six family suites, each with balconies overlooking the mountains, alongside a wellbeing suite that includes a gym and relaxation area. Additional amenities include a games room, playroom, two lounge areas, restaurant, and cinema facilities, all designed to foster comfort and community. Shared spaces such as a reception area, office, and learning space complement meeting rooms and a crèche with sensory facilities, all fully accessible to meet disabled and medical requirements.
