Heron Bros Ltd is proud to be the construction partner of choice for pharmaceutical giant ALMAC, having built, remodelled, and maintained the company’s building stock over the last decade as part of a substantial £50 million framework. This extensive partnership has seen the delivery of storage warehouses, cold stores, secure vaults, distribution centres, and administration offices tailored to meet the stringent demands of the pharmaceutical industry. Among these projects, the successful delivery of ALMAC’s European Headquarters and EU Distribution Centre in Dundalk, Co. Louth, stands out as a flagship achievement.

The £25 million Dundalk facility is a purpose built, 79,000 sq. ft, three-storey complex designed to support pan-European clinical supply logistics. It integrates high-spec administrative offices, a QC laboratory, production spaces, and a temperature controlled distribution hub with cold and frozen storage. The building includes GMP compliant environments, freezer rooms, and high-density pallet racking systems capable of storing over 3,000 pallets of sensitive pharmaceutical products. This integration of spaces enables ALMAC to maintain its rigorous standards for pharmaceutical storage and distribution across Europe.

Constructed with a structural steel frame, poured in situ concrete slabs, and pad and strip foundations, the building is enclosed with 9,150m² of composite metal cladding and high performance curtain wall glazing engineered to meet SBEM energy targets. Internally, the cold storage zones feature anti-slip Alto quartz flooring, while category A mechanical and electrical systems, integrated fire detection, and suppression infrastructure support safe and efficient operations. Cold stores are precisely regulated to +2°C and freezers to -20°C, with temperature integrity confirmed through 48 hour steady state testing. Dedicated cold docks ensure thermal consistency during loading, highlighting the facility’s attention to operational detail.

Delivered on a live site within an active business park, the project followed a fast-track programme and achieved BIM Level 2 maturity. The fit-out included seamless integration with existing infrastructure, installation of loose furniture, AV systems, and commissioning of all M&E services. Off-site fabrication of racking, shelving, and cooling plant enhanced build speed and safety. Today, the Dundalk centre operates as ALMAC’s primary EU clinical distribution hub, featuring advanced environmental controls and robust logistical capacity a testament to Heron Bros’ expertise in delivering complex, regulation critical pharmaceutical environments.
