Heron Bros Ltd partnered with Almac Pharmaceuticals to deliver a £65 million state-of-the-art GMP Commercial Manufacturing Facility at Almac’s global headquarters in Craigavon. This 100,000 sq ft² facility represents the latest milestone in a two-decade partnership, which has exceeded £200 million in value. The project was designed to future proof Almac’s manufacturing capabilities, incorporating flexible production suites capable of integrating client specific processing technologies. Delivered in one of the UK’s most advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing environments, the development meets stringent Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, ensuring Almac remains a leader in pharmaceutical innovation.
From early contractor involvement to final commissioning, HBL assumed full responsibility for design coordination, specialist M&E integration, GMP compliance, and intricate logistics. The facility was constructed within a live, 24/7 operational campus, requiring precision planning to avoid disruption to ongoing operations. By strategically sequencing works Heron Bros maintained safety, programme certainty, and quality, while navigating the constraints of a highly regulated and secure environment.
Sustainability was a core principle of the project, reflected in extensive offsite fabrication to reduce waste and transport emissions, a steel portal frame designed for disassembly in line with circular economy principles, and precision “just-in-time” material logistics. These strategies, alongside alignment our environmental and energy management standards, supported Almac and HBL’s shared Net-Zero 2045 commitment. The structural solutions also ensured long term adaptability, reducing the need for future demolition and lowering embodied carbon.
The completed facility features high-specification spaces, including advanced production suites, dedicated storage areas, and lineside warehousing to support streamlined manufacturing operations. The flexible layout is designed to accommodate a variety of client specific processing technologies, while specialist M&E systems are fully integrated to meet GMP compliance. Constructed with a demountable steel portal frame, the building supports future expansion and adaptability, ensuring longevity and operational efficiency. High grade finishes, precision environmental controls, and robust security systems ensure the facility not only meets but exceeds the rigorous demands of the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.
