Crookfur Primary School & Nursery
Heron Bros was the lead contractor for Crookfur Primary School and Nursery extension and extensive refurbishment in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. The £8m project is part of the Scottish Government’s Schools for the Future investment programme and has increased the school’s capacity to 420 pupil places and 90 nursery places.
The existing 1970’s school building underwent major refurbishment works in the live and fully occupied site to bring the school up to current DDA compliance, providing a new state of the art facility to serve the community for years to come.
The new works comprised of the design and construction of a new single storey nursery school extension to the existing primary school, provision of temporary accommodation and the phased refurbishment of the existing primary school.
The refurbishment works consisted of asbestos removal, complete replacement of roof covering, replacement of all windows and external doors, as well as the replacement of internal and external stairs.
Externally, an all-weather 5 aside pitch was provided along with an external play area for the nursery building. Heron Bros also made minor alterations to the existing carpark and some new surfacing to the existing access road.
The BIM Level 2 Crookfur scheme was delivered over a 5 phase construction programme that facilitated a number of decants to temporary accommodation provided by Heron Bros. The building was completed to deliver sectional completion, handing over areas of the school when ready for occupancy and working restrictions placed to ensure our dedicated workforce had clear site boundary lines at all times.
Delivered on time and to budget. Cost meetings were held to eliminate cost increase and introduce savings throughout the development of the scheme. Our specialist supply chain were incorporated in Value Engineering workshops leading to the final account being agreed within budget.
Crookfur was highlighted as the school building that was most in need of investment in East Renfrewshire. This project provides pupils and staff with a new building that looks and feels like a whole new school. The parents and the wider community will also be able to benefit from the greatly revamped facilities.
The project once again places Heron Bros at the forefront of providing innovative, high quality education services in Scotland.
