Heron Bros leads the way for Apprenticeship Development Heron Bros
Heron Bros takes pride in creating a workplace that employees not only enjoy but one in which they can grow and develop themselves both professionally and personally. With over 30% of staff being with Heron Bros for 10 years or more, retaining our talent is paramount to our success.
As well as retaining our talent, we like to develop our staff from an early stage. Every year Heron Bros bring new apprentices onboard to complete apprenticeships in a wide range of professions, from Civil Engineering to Estimating. This gives the apprentices the opportunity to learn alongside colleagues with wealth of experience. 2020 also brings about major milestone work anniversaries for some staff at Heron Bros.
Oliveen Kearney, Receptionist who has been with Heron Bros for over 40 years said, “When I first started working at Heron Bros in 1979 as you can imagine it was a considerably smaller company than it is today. The six Heron brothers were directly involved in the running of the company. They had always treated me with the greatest courtesy and respect, as they did all their staff, for which I will always be grateful. This respect for staff has carried on over the years and continues to the present day.”
At the heart of Heron Bros sustainability strategy is continuous investment in training and increasing the skills and capabilities of our workforce. We also focus on the pipeline of talent joining the organisation.
HR Manager Grainne O’Kane said “We are committed to Apprenticeships at all levels. We recognise the vital role played by our apprentices in working towards our business goals and plans. We provide first-class opportunities with dedicated mentors and we take great pride in the development of people from apprentice to senior roles in our business. An apprenticeship with Heron Bros is an investment in the future for both the apprentice and Heron Bros.
With apprenticeships ranging from Civil & Environmental to Joinery at both entry and higher levels, Heron Bros provide a pathway suitable for all.
Annie Crozier, Civil & Environmental Apprentice said “Heron Bros have been very supportive in every aspect of my Apprenticeship. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to experience many different aspects of a job, from start through to finish.
Getting to work alongside experienced engineers, helping me gain skills that I wouldn’t have got from class, and in turn this has allowed me to apply these to my studies. It has been reassuring to be given responsibility on site and I am confident that I will continue to grow as Engineer through working with Heron Bros.”
Daniel Green said “I have taken a Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil engineering in which I spend four days each week working as a Site Engineer, then spend one day attending the full–time BEng Civil and Environmental Engineering course at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Heron Bros gave me a lot of independence and responsibility very soon after I started, which has improved my skills and abilities but has also made me feel like a valued team member. I have been made to feel that my presence on site is important to everyone and that my full effort should be put into every task I carry out.”
