Sean Reilly: Building a Career in Construction

When did you join Heron Bros?

I joined Heron Bros in June 2016 and my first role was site administrator on £14m Faith Schools’ Joint Campus, Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire.

How did you hear about the role?

I was previously unemployed and had registered with my local employability service ‘WorkEastRen.’ They matched my experience with relevant job opportunities.

What was your previous experience?

After leaving school I attained an SVQ Level 3 in Business & Administration and gained 5 years of work experience in clerical job roles.

What does your work involve?

Being based on-site, I get to see the build progress from start to finish and in a typical day my duties include:

Site-based administration of materials, plant and services received

Promotion of Considerate Constructors Scheme among my colleagues and site staff

Monitoring IMS documents returned on weekly basis

Deliver induction to operatives who arrive on site

I have also gained first-hand experience of the technology used in delivering a successful project.

How has your career developed with Heron Bros?

Since working with Heron Bros, I have availed of a lot of training and development opportunities. Along with all the internal training, I am now a certified Fire Marshall and have attained a CSCS Card.

As a site administrator I support the site management team with the project delivery and I work closely with the project QS on the administration of site materials, plant and services. This part of my job sparked my interest in pursuing a career in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. I discussed different progression routes with my mentor Cathal Heron, Regional Director and we both decided I should shadow one of our quantity surveyors. After shadowing Lucas, a junior quantity surveyor, I discovered the role is very diverse. I really liked that every day was different. This made me determined to pursue a career in this field.

Currently, Heron Bros is supporting my study toward a degree in Quantity Surveying. They offer me flexible working hours around my study. It is great to have the expertise of my colleagues on hand for advice and guidance. After achieving my degree in Quantity Surveying, I aspire to attain chartered status and continue my career with Heron Bros.
